What is CBD? The myths, the facts, and everything else you need to know.

CBD or cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive substance obtained from the extract of the hemp plant. This plant is also known as cannabis Sativa and is a close cousin to the marijuana plant.

Despite the relationship, CBD is far different from marijuana. While marijuana is high in a compound called THC, the hemp plant extract has higher amounts of CBD and negligible levels of CBD.

Contrary to popular belief, CBD doesn’t cause a high. Instead, this compound has many beneficial and therapeutic properties that can provide relief from difficult chronic conditions.

So, what are CBD and THC, and why are they significant? We explain.

THC and CBD:

The hemp plant extract has a wide range of therapeutic and medicinal properties. These properties can be attributed to the presence of more than a hundred different compounds. The chief among them include

  • CBD
  • THC
  • Terpenes
  • Flavonoids

CBD:

CBD or cannabidiol is the non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant, meaning that it doesn’t cause the recreational high we generally associate with marijuana. It works closely with the internal mechanism within your body, known as ECS, to provide relief from various symptoms and conditions.

THC:

THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive compound responsible for causing a high among people who consume it. Marijuana has high levels of THC and low levels of CBD, causing the recreational high.

Terpenes and flavonoids:

These chemical compounds are present in the hemp extract in lesser quantities. They contribute to the flavour and aroma profiles of different hemp strains.

These compounds also exhibit therapeutic properties. When included in your CBD products, they cause a synergistic effect and enhance the product’s nutritional profile and medical benefits.

The human body and the ECS system:

So, what is the ECS system, and why is it significant? ECS, or the endocannabinoid system, is the regulating mechanism within the human body.

The ECS controls various centres such as hunger, sleep, pain, mood, etc. This system also regulates your digestive, muscular, cardiovascular, nervous, and immune systems.

As a result, the ECS controls many functions such as appetite, pain and inflammation, moods and thought processes, fevers, digestion, fertility, etc.

The functioning of the ECS system:

The endocannabinoids present in the ECS attach themselves to the receptors to control and monitor the functioning of various systems.

When you fall sick, or your system fails to function normally, the ECS experiences a discrepancy, and the normal functioning gets disturbed.

When this normal functioning is disrupted, you may typically resort to over-the-counter or prescription medications to get your body back into gear. Most often, though, these medications can cause many side effects.

Certain chronic pain conditions and conditions such as insomnia are hard to treat with medications too. The limited treatment options can cause pain and side effects, requiring you to take more pills.

When suffering from such chronic or bothersome health issues, taking CBD will help you find relief. So, how does this CBD work? And what is its connection with the ECS system?

CBD and ECS:

The ECS system comprises endocannabinoids, and CBD is a cannabinoid. CBD mimics the properties of the endocannabinoids in your body. By this similarity, CBD can positively influence your system and provide relief from various symptoms.

For example, let’s say you have chronic insomnia. This is happening because of some disturbances in the sleep centre in your brain. The receptors in your ECS may not be functioning correctly, or your ECS may not be efficient enough to correct this problem.

CBD attaches itself to the receptors responsible for sleep function, influences them to work better, and improves their functioning. As a result, you find that after taking CBD, you can sleep better.

How long does CBD take to work?

CBD may work overnight to provide temporary relief, but it must be taken regularly for long-term benefits. Do not stop once you start feeling better. You can continue for at least a couple of weeks at the minimum. This is because CBD needs its time to set right the functioning of the receptors, endocannabinoids, and the ECS as well.

Bottom Line:

CBD is non-psychoactive. It isn’t a drug, and it will not cause a high, despite being related to the marijuana family. The deficient levels of THC and high levels of CBD are the reason for this.

By virtue of its ability to influence the ECS system, CBD can provide many therapeutic health and wellness benefits.

If you want to improve your health without the risk of experiencing significant side effects, CBD is an excellent place to start.
